SAFE SCHOOLS

Safe Schools, Healthy Students

Kershaw County School District, South Carolina

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with key partners in Kershaw County to develop a Safe Schools, Healthy Students grant proposal which resulted in an award of approximately $5.7 million over four years.  The comprehensive project includes these universal strategies: school bus cameras, school resource officers, evidence based violence and drug prevention curriculum, after school and summer programs, Positive Behavior Support training, Conscious Discipline, and a social norms campaign.  Early intervention strategies include: truancy prevention staff; targeted parenting support, and Youth Court, a diversion program for first offenders.  More intensive interventions include school based mental health and substance abuse counselors, and programs for re-entry and gang affiliated youth.

 

Safe Schools, Healthy Students

Saluda County School District, South Carolina

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with key partners in Saluda County, S.C. to develop a Safe Schools, Healthy Students grant proposal which was awarded in 2009 and resulted in approximately $3 million over four years.  Some universal strategies include:  a school safety plan, evidence based violence and substance abuse prevention curriculum, and afterschool programs.  Early intervention strategies include a truancy/violence prevention specialist, a parent support specialist, and two early childhood parent educators.  More intensive interventions include hiring a substance abuse specialist and three school based mental health counselors.

 

Project Safe Zone

Madison County School District, Florida

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. provided advice and assistance to the Madison County, Florida School District and key partners in developing a Safe Schools, Healthy Students grant for approximately $3 million over four years.  The Caring and Safe Atmosphere Project(C.A.S.A.) is designed to provide youth programs, services and activities during school, after school and during the extended year to students in the public schools, and expand services to preschool children.  The project is designed to improve security, provide substance abuse and violence prevention curricula, decrease discipline referrals and suspensions, increase attendance and academic scores, provide mental health services and increase screening and assessments for preschool children.


Project SAVE (Services Attributing to Valuable Education)

Lafayette County School District, Florida

Mr. Tidwell and consultants conducted the evaluation for a multi-year evaluation of a Safe Schools, Healthy Students federal grant in Lafayette County, FL.  It addressed school safety, violence, alcohol and drug abuse prevention, mental health services, early childhood development, truancy, services for academically disadvantaged, and community collaboration.

 

Stepping Up

York County Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Council, SC

Mr. Tidwell and consultants wrote the grant proposal that resulted in a $1,198,912 million grant to administer an outreach initiative for rural areas and the American Indians to provide 12-17 year-olds and their families a comprehensive evidence-based treatment plan tailored specifically to meet the needs of this age group.  Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the evaluation.

Mr. Tidwell developed the program design for a Compassion Capital Fund Targeted Capacity Building Program to increase the organization's capacity to deliver an evidence-based character education and violence prevention curricula.  The firm conducted the evaluation.

Project RIPP (Responding in Peaceful and Positive Ways)

The Heartland Educational Consortium, Florida

Mr. Tidwell developed the program design for this project, which replicated a successful violence prevention program from Richmond, Virginia into five rural central Florida school districts. Mr. Tidwell developed the program design for the 21st Century Community Learning Center program to provide a comprehensive after-school program targeting 6th graders at three high-risk middle schools in Columbia, SC.   Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the program evaluation.

Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council, South Carolina

This project was designed to provide an after-school/case management program targeting third graders in a high-risk area in Columbia, SC. Mr. Tidwell developed the overall program design and provided oversight for the outcome evaluation.

 

Stand Together

Richland County School District One

This project provided an after-school/case management program for four schools in Columbia, SC. Mr. Tidwell provided general direction for the process and outcome evaluations. 

 

ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG ABUSE

Collaboration for Success

The South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS)

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with DAODAS to submit an adolescent treatment enhancement grant that was awarded $2,998,359.  The project will provide A-CRA/ACC services to 440 12-17 year old youth in York, Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties resulting in increased access to care, reduced frequency and ultimately abstinence from  substance abuse, improved school behavior, and reduced juvenile referrals.  A state Joint Council on Children and Adolescents will oversee the project. Tidwell and Associates, Inc. is conducting the evaluation. 

 

Prevention Partnership Grant

Manatee Glens, Inc., FL

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with the Manatee Glens Behavioral Health Center in Bradenton, Florida to submit a Prevention Partnership grant, and was awarded $337,500.  The grant will work in partnership with local schools and the county’s drug-free community coalition to implement evidence-based interventions for reducing underage drinking and teen pregnancy. Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the evaluation.

 

 

Steppin' It Up

Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County, SC 

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with the Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County (BHSPC), South Carolina to submit a Drug Free Communities Support Program grant and was awarded $625,000.  The grant will provide resources for the Pickens County Steppin’ It Up Coalition to build upon previous successes by broadening prevention messages and activities to explicitly include marijuana and prescription drugs and by increasing community engagement in strengthening protective factors among youth.  Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the evaluation.

South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS) and The Alpha Center

Mr. Tidwell and consultants wrote the grant proposal that resulted in a $1.48 million grant for The Alpha Center’s ACES program to provide brief strategic family therapy to 300, 12-17 year-olds and their families in Chesterfield and Lee Counties.  Targeted adolescents include those suspended or expelled from school either truant, involved in the juvenile justice system, in foster care, or have been abused and neglected.  SAT coordinators at schools are provided stipends for coordinating school referrals.  Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the process and outcome evaluation.

 

Pathways

Tri-County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse

The Commission in Orangeburg, SC implemented Pathways, a $1.15 million grant for 11-15 year olds at risk for substance abuse and their families. The early intervention services utilizes two evidence-based intervention programs, Project Alert, and the Parent Project. Five schools servicing 6-8th graders are receiving services. Mr. Tidwell’s firm conducted the process and outcome evaluation.

Juvenile Drug Court Program

Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission

In Columbia, SC, the grant to the state Department of Alcohol and other Drug Abuse Services and implemented by the Lexington/Richland Alcohol and other Drug Abuse Council adds additional staff support to the Juvenile drug Court Program which has been in existence for six years.  The program serves more juveniles than before and through various enhancements and has a goal of improving the success rate. Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the evaluation.

 

Project Open Horizons

SAMHSA-Center for Substance Abuse Treatment 

The purpose of this project was to implement an adolescent community reinforcement  approach for high-risk adolescents in Orangeburg County, SC through the Tri-County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.  Mr. Tidwell and staff  developed the program design and conducted the process and outcome evaluation.

 

Holden Heights Empowerment Project, FL (CSAP)

This prevention program in Orlando provides HIV/AIDS and substance abuse prevention education to urban youth, ages 12 to 17.

Fighting Back

Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council (LRADAC)

Mr. Tidwell was the senior consultant for this project, which was a comprehensive community coalition effort to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse in the greater Columbia area. Mr. Tidwell assisted with outcome based planning for various initiatives and provided oversight of the evaluation of specific initiatives, such as the after-school program and community incentives program. He also assisted with resource development, resulting in $14 million in new programs.

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with the Sampson County School District in North Carolina to submit an Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program grant and was awarded $1,187,115.  The grant will provide resources for the school district to increase the availability of counseling and mental health services to the district’s 4,051 elementary school students in grades K-5.  Tidwell and Associates, Inc. is conducting the evaluation.

Orangeburg County Consolidated School District Three, SC

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. worked with the Orangeburg County Consolidated School District Three, South Carolina to submit an Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program grant and was awarded $1,185,527.  The grant will provide resources for the Orangeburg County Consolidated School District Three to expand its current counseling program and enable more data-based decision-making to reduce disciplinary referrals, bullying, fighting, suspensions, and improved academic growth.  Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the evaluation.

Mr. Tidwell provided consultation and evaluation services for this comprehensive program to serve the chronicallly mentally ill in Charleston, SC. The program provided a wide range of services including assertive case management, psychosocial clubhouse, rural outreach, and consumer advocacy initiatives. 

Building for the Future: A Multi-State HRD Consortium

Mr. Tidwell’s consulting team developed the program design for a multi-state Human Resource Development Consortium to establish a training center in Atlanta, GA for 14 State Departments of Mental Health.

HEALTH

Cuidando mi Salud/Taking Care of My Health

Hispanic Health Initiatives, Inc., FL

Tidwell and Associates, Inc. wrote the grant proposal that resulted in a community-based initiative for reducing disparities in health outcomes among Hispanic and African American adults in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties.  The project leverages volunteer and staff resources among partners to provide health risk assessments  and education on chronic disease management and prevention.  Tidwell and Associates, Inc. is conducting the evaluation.  

Healthy Start

United Way of South Carolina 

Mr. Tidwell developed the overall program design for implementing a comprehensive strategy to reduce infant mortality in six counties of South Carolina which, at this time, resulted in the largest grant ever received in the state. 

 

TeenNet

Bethlehem Partners in Prevention

Mr. Tidwell and his consulting team developed a community-based strategy to reduce teen pregnancy among high-risk youth in Spartanburg, SC.

 

 

CRIMINAL JUVENILE / JUSTICE AND CORRECTIONS

The purpose of this program was to implement a jail diversion program for misdemeanant offenders in Columbia, SC by providing mental health and substance abuse case management and treatment services.  Tidwell & Associates, Inc. was the evaluator for the program.

Mr. Tidwell developed the proposal to implement a substance abuse therapeutic community in an adult correctional institution in Columbia, SC. Tidwell and Associates, Inc. conducted the  three-year evaluation of the project.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stayin’ Straight

South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardons. Mr. Tidwell developed the program design for a day center and case management program targeting probationers and parolees with diagnosed substance abuse problems. The firm then conducted a three-year evaluation which provided a one-year follow-up on offenders released from the program.

Mr. Tidwell guided statewide efforts to replicate a model program for diverting nonviolent offenders with mental health problems from adult jail.  A manual was developed for others to follow in implementing a jail diversion program.  A statewide steering committee assisted in the process.

Mr. Tidwell  provided consulting support to develop a youth violence prevention strategy for four Midlands counties in SC.

 

Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Goals

Florida Bureau of Criminal Justice

Mr. Tidwell was the project director for a statewide effort which resulted in the development of criminal justice standards and goals for the state of Florida. He worked with seven gubernatorially appointed task forces and multiple local committees.  He directed a follow-up project to analyze the costs associated with implementing priority standards.

Comprehensive Communities Program: People Helping People

City of Columbia, South Carolina

Mr. Tidwell led a team of consultants to develop a comprehensive crime control strategy for the City of Columbia.

South Carolina Governor’s Office

Mr. Tidwell served for seven years in Governor Riley’s office, directing the Office of  Criminal Justice Programs and later the Division of Public Safety. He led many criminal and juvenile justice legislative reforms and received the “Order of the Palmetto” for his efforts.

Out for Life

Mr. Tidwell developed the program design for a comprehensive life skills program implemented in multiple adult correctional institutions to assist offenders with reintegration efforts into the community.

VICTIM SERVICES

Tidwell & Associates, Inc. has been a co-principal investigator on several projects which impact victims of crime. They include:

Counseling Victims of Violent Crime

SC Department of Mental Health

This project analyzed the potential number of crime victims in SC who experience post-traumatic stress syndrome. The report also projected the number of crime victims entering the mental health intake system and made numerous recommendations to improve the Department’s response to crime victims. Mr. Tidwell was a senior consultant for the project.

Treating Victims of Violent Crime: A Training Conference for Mental Health Practitioners, Program Administrators, and Victim Assistance Advocates

National Crime Victims Research and Treatment CenterMedical University of South Carolina

Mr. Tidwell was part of a consulting team to provide several regional training workshops across the country to mental health professionals to enhance the delivery of services to crime victims. 

 

TECHNOLOGY

Mr. Tidwell worked with a steering committee to develop a five-year strategy to improve the utilization and overall technology skills for students, teachers, and administrators in RCSD1. The project resulted in an infusion of $5 million to the district.

 

A Proposal to Implement a Telecommunications Equipment Distribution Program

South Carolina Association for the Deaf

Mr. Tidwell led consultants to develop a statewide strategy to implement a telecommunications distribution program for the deaf and hearing impaired in South Carolina.  The program was successfully implemented.

Total Spectrum Access System

Mr. Tidwell and his consulting team developed a strategy which resulted in funding assistance to use new technology in modifying exhibits and increasing accessibility to the South Carolina State Museum for persons with disabilities.
